The Carrier Sekani First Nations are currently engaged with forestry companies to collaboratively plan for the future in our region. For more than 20 years, forests in BC have been heavily impacted by salvage harvesting of mountain pine beetle infested stands. Climate change has been the root cause the infestation, and has also led to longer and more intense forest fire seasons.
These issues have left our forest ecosystems on the verge of collapse. The moose population has declined by as much as 75%. And our short-term timber supply is running out.
Through a collaborative planning process, the Carrier Sekani First Nations and the forest licensees in the region are working together to preserve crucial wildlife habitat, and ensure a sustainable forestry industry for the region into the future.
